Action Plans for Mild to Moderate Cases

This chapter addresses patients with mild to moderate ME/CFS who retain some functional capacity but experience significant symptom burden that impairs quality of life. The goal is to maximize function, prevent progression to severe disease, and pursue recovery.

Note: For pediatric and adolescent patients, see Chapter Pediatric ME/CFS: School-Attending and Ambulatory Cases for age-specific protocols including school accommodations, developmental considerations, and pediatric dosing modifications.

NoteChapter Roadmap: How to Use This Chapter

For patients: read the severity-stratified pathways section to place yourself, then the immediate-mild-moderate and disease-modifying sections to build a staged plan you can follow at home; for age-specific pediatric protocols, school accommodations, and pediatric dosing, use Chapter Pediatric ME/CFS: School-Attending and Ambulatory Cases.

For caregivers: use the severity-stratified pathways and work-study sections to help the patient schedule activity within their capacity while preventing progression to severe disease.

For clinicians: read the severity-stratified pathways, septad-screening, disease-modifying, and GET-avoidance sections to construct a staged treatment plan that maximises function and prevents progression.

For researchers: the septad-screening and disease-modifying sections identify the early-intervention targets where progression to severe disease might be prevented — a key open question for trials.
